When painting a carpeted room, keep in mind that paint will soak through drop cloths. This is especially true of the cheaper, lightweight cloths. It helps to tape masking paper to all of the base boards before laying the drop cloths. Tuck the edges of the cloth under the paper--this will help keep it clean. You might want to invest in a hand-held masking machine--they make the job go much faster. Wood around windows and entire bay window and trim had rotted wood that needed repair and repainting within a short period of time due to end of season. They provided a fair and detailed quote and began work quickly. They gave an honest assessment of what was needed and what was not - i.e. - the garage was in good shape and didn't need repainting. I am not there so they provided updates regularly by phone. They went beyond the scope of the contract and fixed some problems that would have required a window person. Thanks for the information.I have beenvpainting on and off again for the past 20 yrs.And have seen alot of different type painters.Which makes me interested and believe I should do good and be successful at a painting company. I’m 41 wasted alot if time working for people in the construction field. It was a pleasure working with Distinct Painting Co. from the estimate to completion. Kane Robinson (owner) is a true professional, both knowledgeable and friendly. The contract contained the date for painting to begin and they began earlier than expected. Preparation was quite involved as was the painting on my two story house. To industrial and institutional. I also own and operate a professional painting company of elite painters ONLY 5 ELITE PAINTERS, and pay them good money for being elite. Less is better in my opinion.The fact is this a homeowner and a painting company owner can both be taken advantage of by hustlers and liars and amateurs posing as pros. I have had many laborers tell me they can paint. " Oh yes sir I can paint, I'm a painter of 8 years. Yes sir I can cut a straight line." Some people will say and do anything to get a buck. If yoir on the job to see their rookie mistakes you may have time to save your reputation before disaster ensues and fire them on the spot. As a painting Company owner if your not on the job with your crew at least 3 out of 6 days every week your taking a huge risk of damaging your reputation and losing the respect of your team. Homeowners want to deal with you or the crew boss (jobs site supervisor) not "the painter". Many things I have read are right on. Painters for the most part will milk a clock for all they can and still do a good job. But amateurs will leave your projects in shambles and the only ones to pay for it is the contractor and the homeowners. But an elite painter and crew will try to complete a project as quickly as possible and move on to the next one. They understand bonuses, incentives, and promotions. My company provides the opportunity for a homeowner to meet each member of the crew and shake there hand on day one. There is also a differentiation between the crew boss and the crew by the uniforms they wear. Should the homeowners have any issue at all they know exactly who to go to to get results. This eliminates the age old problem of who screwed up? I have found that by me putting on my whites and giving my crew the opportunity to out do themselves on each project it ignites competition, pride in skill, and excellent commraderie amongst the team. We all hold each other accountable. Choose your contractor by the crew not the owner. The crew is a direct reflection of the Company owner. No room for rookies on fine finish painting. Go pro for painting and you won't regret it. With that being said homeowners should always remember that you get what you pay for. With paint and services. In most cases it will be well worth a few extra bucks to get elite results. Never go with the cheapest bid there is always a reason why it's so low.
All colors have a base tone which might not be as apparent on a small swatch, but when the color is painted over an entire wall or room – the base color will stand out. Brown colors will sometimes appear to have a pink hue to them, and greys very often have some purple or blue to them. He came the very next morning and then did a walk around of my property and told me he would have a bid prepared and emailed to me by the end of the day. As promised, this bid showed up around 4:00 p.m. I called several other painters to get estimates as well, always checking that the reviews were not fake (Like all 5 star reviews grouped within a month of each other, as if they had all their friends give them great reviews). I also checked with the California Contractors board to verify current Licences and if in fact the painters were working under their own license or working under some random contractor's license that wasn't even a painters license, (Some had no license at all!), I checked to see if the companies I interviewed were listed with the BBB, and if they were, if they had any unresolved claims against them. CHECK Bonded with workers comp to protect me if someone got hurt on the job at my home. CHECK A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau with no unresolved issues. CHECK Hundreds of 5-Star reviews on yelp dating back to 2011. Check An address list and phone numbers of willing, former clients' homes for me to view in my area. CHECK To top it off, the best price of all the bids! CHECK I hired House Painters Inc. and set up a date for them to come. The whole operation took about 5 and a half days from start to finish. Sung and his crew were extremely conscientious of all our belongings and took great care preparing the house. They showed up on time at 8:30 everyday, and were completely unobtrusive with our comings and goings during their week here. They repaired some dry rot, repaired cracks in the stucco, installed some flashing on trouble spots on my eaves, scraped, sanded, power washed, dug trenches, protected plants and addressed every need I knew about, and they even pointed out, then fixed some things that I was unaware of. Everyday Sung and his crew worked clean and stowed everything away, every night except the protective sheeting. I was thrilled with the outcome and quality of their work. I painted my home the same color as I did 20 years ago, and I am ecstatic with how fresh and clean it looks again. I would hire these guys again in a heartbeat!

I disagree with your criteria to hire a painter. A prompt returned call is nice but does not indicate the quality or fairness of the painter. As far as a written estimate, that should be more of a qualifier for the bid versus an evaluation criterion. I'm not sure one would have favorable results by hiring a painter on this basis. As far as the bidding process, change orders should ONLY be used if the customer requests additional scope (PMP 101). Angie's list should consider asking reviewers if/how much they were told to pay compared with the estimate. Unfortunately, there are a lot of contractors that are unethical and need to be accountable.
I contacted six highly-rated contractors to receive bids for painting the exterior of my Eagle Rock house.  Two never responded, one was too busy to schedule the work before spring, and three responded promptly with inspections and cost estimates.  Mr. Lee of House Painting, Inc. also provided a printed list of references and copies of his business license, insurance and BBB rating.  He was low bidder by a small margin, and I contracted with him for the work.  His crew was outstanding - excellent preparation (sanding, priming, stucco patching), fast and efficient paint coverage, and excellent clean-up at the end of each work day.  I will certainly call them in the future for interior painting.
